Without a doubt, the Mustang is a cultural icon and a definite status symbol. Its looks, power, and performance makes it one of the most coveted cars of several generations. No matter what decade, the Mustang is the premier American muscle car – hands down. But which Mustangs are the best of the best? Here’s a look at the fastest Mustangs ever built.

2013 Shelby GT500

Teaming with Shelby, a performance car designer, Ford introduced the Shelby GT500 in 2013, and turned the muscle car business upside down. Today, no American automaker has been able to upstage its power. Boasting a supercharged 5.8 liter, V-8 engine, the GT500 sports a whopping 662 horsepower and 631 pound-feet of torque. This enables it to take a quarter-mile in 11.7 seconds and get from zero to 60 in 3.5 seconds. With so much power, it’s a wonder if you’ll have the driving skills to handle it.

2000 Mustang SVT Cobra R

Built on the body of the early 2000 Mustangs, many Mustang-enthusiasts find the body a bit plain. However, it’s what’s lurking under the hood that really matters. The 5.4 liter, V-8 engine pushes 385 horsepower with 385 pound-feet of torque. With this power, it delivers a zero to 60 time of 4.4 seconds, as well as a quarter-mile of 12.9 seconds, maxing out at 110 miles per hour. Let the SVT Cobra R be a lesson to never judge a book by its cover.

1968 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet

To compete with other company’s models, such as the Barracuda, Camaro, or Firebird, Ford had to do something drastic – they succeeded. Rocking a 428 V-8 engine, the Cobra Jet had 410 horsepower, which was unheard of at the time. In fact, the car was so powerful that Ford stated the car only had 335 horsepower in efforts to calm unwilling insurance agents. This was with good reason, as the car reached a quarter-mile in a mere 11.5 seconds.

1971 Mustang Boss 351

This car was one of Ford’s first attempts at a fastback model, and although it veered from the original idea of the Mustang, its power was nonetheless great. This monster boasts a 13.9 seconds quarter-mile thanks to a beastly 351 cubic inch Cleveland 351 engine. This generated an awesome 335 horsepower, which burned by the competitors. Perhaps the coolest fact was that you could buy this car in 1971 for a mere $4,124.

Eleanor

Although more of a movie icon, Eleanor was another Mustang off the 1971 assembly line with blazing speed. Known for its appearances in both installments of the movie Gone in 60 Seconds, this Mustang Sportsroof hits zero to 60 in 8.1 seconds, and zero to 100 in 24.6 seconds. Although it’s a bit slower than the rest, its sentimental value is priceless.

These Mustangs definitely push power to the extreme. However, even today’s Mustang boasts an engine that gets you from here to there in a pinch. If you’re planning on buying a Mustang, get ready. You’re entering an exclusive club of power and performance that few even consider treading.
